BIPOLAR IONIZATION (BPI) SYSTEMS

Bipolar ionization systems cleans air indoors. Furthermore, bipolar ionization (BPI) is a technology that’s been around for many years. It’s main purpose is to clean indoor spaces via the air. BPI does a handful of beneficial treatments including reducing odors by destroying volatile organic compounds (VOCs). While also reducing dust and mold particles by gathering the small particles into larger ones. Typically, these particles fall out of the air or get caught in standard filters. These have been traditional drivers for BPI. The fact that BPI also kills viruses and bacteria has given this technology a renewed focus.

BIPOLAR IONIZATION SYSTEMS CLEAN AIR

Bipolar ionization systems generate positive and negative ions that release into space via the airflow generated by the HVAC system. Typically, installation is downstream of the fan of and AHU, RTU or FCU. The energized ions distribute into all rooms connected to the duct system of the HVAC unit.

Once in the space the ions can get to work and breakdown the hydrocarbon chains of the VOCs. So then the ions charge particles to attract them to each other and make small particles larger. Finally, the ions can breakdown the surface proteins found in viruses, bacteria and mold.

By destroying these surface proteins, the ions render the organisms inactive and unable to regenerate or reproduce. Additionally, the disabled organisms are incapable of causing infection if it was to enter a body. As a result of being in space, bipolar ions can attack both airborne and surface organisms. Ultimately, bipolar ionization cleans the air we breathe making a safer living space.

PURIFIED AIR SYSTEMS’ TECHNIQUE

Purified Air Systems uses AtmosAir products for our bipolar ionization solutions. Usually we will install AtmosAir BPI systems in an air-handling piece of equipment downstream of the supply fan. The ionization tubes have a useful life of 18,000 hours and you’ll want to change them every two years. Other than that, these systems require no maintenance. AtmosAir offers a wide variety of systems at both the commercial and residential levels. You can see the full list of systems that Purified Air Systems can install below.

Benefits of Bipolar Ionization Systems

  • Bipolar ionization can help reduce dust and mold particles. Bipolar ions gain size by bonding with contaminants which eventually drops to the floor or get caught by the filter. As a result, this makes it easy to remove these contaminants from the air we breathe.

  • Also, bipolar ionization helps reduce odors. Thus by attacking the source of the odor these ions are able to break the particles down and eliminate them.

  • These systems helps lessen the threat of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Furthermore, bipolar ions can help eliminate particles or gasses that are known to be dangerous. For example, it can help protect you from dangerous chemicals in cleaning products, pesticides, paints, and much more.

  • Also, these help reduce bacteria and viruses from spreading with bipolar ionization. It has been proven that bipolar ions adversely affect the DNA of bacteria and viruses. As a result, you’ll be better able to protect your property from illness or disease with these systems.
  • Another great benefit is you’ll help save energy! For example, BPI can reduce energy by allowing one to reduce the amount of outside air that is required in a space. As a result of this reduction in outside air use, you’ll see a direct effect on lower utility bills.

    Do the benefits ever stop?

  • Also, Bipolar ionization can help reduce static electricity. To summarize, bipolar ions neutralize air and naturally eliminate static charges.

  • In addition to these benefits, BPI systems require very little maintenance. Since there aren’t any filters or collectors to clean or replace there’s very little maintenance that has to be done. Therefore, you’ll only need to replace the ionization tubes every two years.

  • Ultimately, you’ll be getting a safe, natural and environmentally friendly process. in short, the bipolar ionization technology uses no chemicals, heavy metals or mercury. Beyond that, it generates no harmful outputs such as ozone or ultra-violet light.

  • In summary, these systems produce better indoor air quality, which has a positive impact on human cognitive functions. As a result, productivity of employees is increased; decision-making is better and test scores for students are improved. In short, better indoor air quality reduces absenteeism for employees and students.

FAQ’s about Bipolar Ionization

Why is Indoor Air Quality Important?

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is vital to our health and well-being. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) named IAQ as one of the top five environmental health risks. The EPA notes that indoor air pollution rates are two to five times worse than outdoor air pollution rates. This indoor air pollution can contribute to substantial health problems. These could include lung disease, respiratory infections, asthma and lung cancer. With most people spending the majority of time indoors, it’s vital that you address IAQ  for your long-term health.

How is BPI different from UV Lights?

UV lights have limits on the contaminants they can affect and are also used to keep cooling coils clean. These contaminants have to pass through the UV lights long enough to be effective. UV lights are  a reactive system as it requires the air to return to the HVAC system. However, UV Lights can help with the performance of your BPI system and the overall IAQ. The EPA recommends to have a combination of both a BPI and UV Light system. By having both it will help the HVAC system be more effective in combatting bacteria and viruses.

Will humidity impact the performance of the systems?

Yes, humid air will yield lower ionization levels than that of dry air. That is why we account for local environments when we install these AtmosAir systems to ensure their effectiveness.

How often do I need to clean or change the ionization tubes on my system?

You typically won’t need to clean your ionization tubes unless you live in a heavily polluted environment. Typically, you won’t need to clean these tubes if you’re in a residential neighborhood. Although we will remind you that clean tubes will produce more ions than that of dirty tubes. It is recommended places like casinos, industrial plants or other industrial environments like this clean these tubes regularly.

It’s important to replace ionization tubes regardless every two years. Tubes will eventually degrade and become less effective after this time.

Can these systems measure Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in real time?

Yes, these systems offer real time air quality sensors that scan for various contaminants. These include Particulate matter, formaldehyde, CO2, temperature, RH, VOCs, ozone, noise and light. You can access these sensors and measurements via any device.
